Chicago man killed, California woman critically injured in I-57 crash in Oak Forest

A Chicago man died on Interstate 57 in Oak Forest overnight when the car he was in rear-ended another car that was stopped on the road after becoming disabled, critically injuring a passenger in the first car, police said.Roosevelt Logan, 23, of the 9700 block of South Wentworth Avenue, was pronounced dead at 12:04 a.m. at the scene on I-57 near Cicero Avenue and 171st Street in Oak Forest, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. A 20-year-old woman from Santa Rosa, California suffered life-threatening injuries when the car she was in was hit by the car Logan had been in, according to a release from Illinois State Police.

The two-vehicle crash happened about 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, and all southbound lanes of I-57 were closed at 167th Street for about five hours, according to state police.The two cars were heading south on I-57 when the one the woman was in, a silver 2005 Nissan Altima, became disabled in the right lane and the car Logan was in, a white 2016 Nissan Sentra, moved from the center lane into the right lane, rear-ending the Altima, police said in a release.

The driver of the Sentra, a 44-year-old man from Lockport, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The driver of the car the woman was in, a 22-year-old Chicago man, as well as another passenger in his car, a 19-year-old Sacramento, California, woman, were not injured, police said.

About 2:10 a.m., a passenger car hit two Illinois Department of Transportation trucks whose drivers were helping with traffic control, injuring the two drivers, state police said. The drivers were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, police said.

No information about charges or citations was immediately released.
