Indiana man struck by 3 vehicles on I-65 after running out of gas dies

SELLERSBURG, Ind. — A Henryville man is dead following a crash on southbound I-65 late Thursday night.

Indiana State Police said that around 11 p.m., Cody Whitehead, 24, was waiting on the side of I-65 in Sellersburg after his vehicle ran out of gas. Police said his hazard lights were on. He was waiting for assistance when a semitruck crossed the fog line, hit Whitehead’s vehicle and pushed it into the guardrail.

His vehicle was then hit by another semi and a cargo van, which police say were unable to avoid the collision.

Whitehead was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was hurt.

So far, no one has been charged in cited in the crash, but the investigation is ongoing.

Police said it is unclear why the initial semi crossed the line.
