One dead, two injured after tanker truck runs off I-64 and overturns into wooded area

A man died and two others were injured Monday after a two-vehicle accident on Interstate-64 in Hampton, according to a news release from Virginia State Police.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya said in the news release that a man was driving a 2003 Ford Taurus with a female passenger on I-64 when the vehicle broke down. The vehicle was disabled on the right shoulder, west of the Hampton Roads Center Parkway.At around 2:38 a.m., the driver of a 2012 Kenworth tanker truck ran off the road, hit the Ford Taurus on the shoulder and pushed it into the nearby wooded area.After hitting the Taurus, the tanker truck overturned into the wooded area, killing the driver, Anaya said in the release. Hampton Fire and Rescue were called to the scene to get the driver out of the truck. During the extraction, a Hampton firefighter was injured and had to be taken from the scene.

The man and female occupant in the Taurus were taken to Riverside Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the release said.
