Woman struck by vehicle on I-94 near Englewood

A preliminary investigation found that the woman was a passenger of a vehicle that was having mechanical issues and the driver of the vehicle pulled over to the left shoulder and partially into the left lane and as she got out of the vehicle, she was struck by a passing vehicle. A 19-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle Sunday on Interstate 94 near Englewood on the South Side, according to preliminary information from Illinois State police.

A preliminary investigation found that the woman was a passenger of a vehicle that was having mechanical issues and the driver of the vehicle pulled over to the left shoulder and partially into the left lane, state police said.

About 4:50 a.m., as the 19-year-old got out of the vehicle, she was struck by a passing vehicle, state police said. The vehicle that struck her continued driving.

The woman was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, state police said.

Local lanes were closed for an investigation about 5:05 a.m. and traffic was diverted into the express lanes, state police said. All lanes were reopened by 8:30 a.m.
