Man hit by U-Haul, killed while standing on I-95 Monday morning, police say

A 39-year-old Wilmington man died Monday morning after being hit by a U-Haul truck as he stood next to his car on Interstate 95, Delaware State Police said.

Troopers were called to I-95 south, south of Harvey Road near Claymont just before 1:45 a.m. after receiving reports of the crash.

On scene, troopers spoke to the driver of the U-Haul, who said the 39-year-old stopped his Chevrolet Suburban in the right lane of the highway and stood next to the driver’s side door. Police said they don’t know why the man stopped.The U-Haul driver, who was also in the right lane, tried to swerve into the left lane to avoid hitting the man, but couldn’t turn in time. The driver hit the Chevrolet and the man, killing him.The U-Haul then veered out of control before flipping onto its side and stopping across the southbound lanes of the highway. Police closed the road for about four-and-a-half hours while they investigated.
