Good Samaritan helping stranded driver struck, killed in hit-run near JFK Airport

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A Good Samaritan who was helping a stranded motorist was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver near Kennedy International Airport in Queens on Friday night, police said.

The 51-year-old man was standing near his black Audi sedan on the eastbound side of the Nassau Expressway, near North Hanger Road in Springfield Gardens, at the time he was struck, according to police.

Police said a blue 2012 Ford E350 van hit the man shortly before 8:20 p.m. After the van struck the man, its driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, police said.The good Samaritan was helping the driver of a red Dodge Caravan after the vehicle became disabled on the expressway, according to police.

He was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He has not yet been identified.

No arrests have been reported as of Saturday. Police said an investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad is ongoing.
