TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Authorities are investigating after a bystander was struck and killed while trying to help a driver involved in a rollover crash on I-70 in Shawnee County.
The crash was reported just after 3:15 p.m. Sunday on I-70 near SW West Union Road. The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office said a black car was headed east on I-70 when it went off the road into a grassy center median and landed upside down.
They said the driver, Dakota Swader, 20, of Topeka was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
KHP says Autumn Johnson, 21, of Wasilla, Alaska, witnessed the accident and parked on the right shoulder of the road. She was struck by an oncoming vehicle while attempting to run across the highway towards the median.
Johnson was rushed to a Topeka hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Johnson, identified as John Moulden, 37, of Knoxville, Tennessee, was not injured.
According to the patrol, Moulden was driving a 2022 International.
