24-year-old woman killed in hit-and-run in University City, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — A 24-year-old woman died at a hospital after she was hit by two vehicles early Monday morning in the University City area, CMPD said in a news release.

Alexis Wilkins stepped out onto East Mallard Creek Church Road near North Tryon Street at about 2:30 a.m. when a 2001 Mercedes E320 struck her. The driver of the Mercedes stopped and called 911 when another vehicle, believed to be a red 2015-1017 Hyundai Sonata, hit Wilkins and did not stop.The vehicle, which was believed to have been speeding, should have front-end damage to it.The driver of the Mercedes was not impaired, police said.

Wilkins was taken to a hospital but died later in the day. The investigation into the hit-and-run is active and ongoing.

Police had shut down the eastbound lanes of Mallard Creek Church Road after the wreck as they collected evidence.
