A group of men was changing a flat tire on I-75 in Sarasota Thursday night when four were hit by a car and killed, FL Highway Patrol said.
SARASOTA, FL — Four men who pulled over to change a tire on I-75 southbound late Thursday night were struck by a car and killed, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.The crash, which happened near the 209-mile marker in Sarasota, occurred just before 10 p.m.
A pick-up truck with a towing trailer was unoccupied and stopped on the inside I-75 paved shoulder because of a flat trailer tire on the right side, the FHP said. Seven men who had been in the truck were standing outside the truck to help with the tire change.
A car traveling southbound on I-75 veered from the highway into the shoulder, hitting the pick-up truck and striking and killing four of the men, FHP said.
The four men, whose names, ages and cities haven’t been released, were pronounced dead at the scene.The three other men — a 21-year-old and a 19-year-old from Ft. Myers and a 22-year-old from Hialeah — weren’t hit and were uninjured in the crash.
The driver of the car, a 34-year-old woman, and her passenger, a 32-year-old man, both from Lakeland, were also uninjured.The crash remains under investigation. Any witnesses are asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol at 239-938-1800.
