Driver dies after Mercedes hits I-680 center divide starting chain reaction crash

DUBLIN — A driver died early Saturday after a Mercedes-Benz crashed into the center divide of a freeway and was then hit by other cars, authorities said.

The driver was ejected during the chain reaction crash and died at the scene. Authorities did not identify the driver immediately, police said.

According to Dublin police and the California Highway Patrol, the Mercedes C230 hit the divider wall on southbound Interstate 680 southbound north of Alcosta Boulevard. The crash happened about 3 a.m.

A Ford Fusion hit the disabled Mercedes, causing that car’s driver to be thrown from the car, authorities said. The Mercedes then came to rest in the right lane and was struck by a semi-truck before hitting another vehicle.

Police said no other injuries were reported. The CHP shut down southbound traffic from about 4 a.m. to 7 a.m.. The CHP said alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the incident.
