El Paso man causes six-vehicle crash in Hartley, County and killed in accident

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Donald Diebel Jr. of El Paso, Texas was responsible for causing a 6-vehicle crash Friday morning.

The six-car pileup happened on the US 54 in Hartley, County located 6 miles Southwest of Dalhart, Texas according to a press release issued by the Texas Department of Transportation.

TxDot reports that construction in a Southbound lane of the US 54 had caused traffic to come to a complete stop when Diebel’s vehicle did not stop or reduce his speed for the stalled traffic.

Diebel was driving a truck tractor semi-trailer when he rear ended another semi-trailer in front of him and caused a chain reaction.

Along with Diebel two people were killed in that crash.

All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

The two people killed with Diebel were identified as Marvin Wirtjes, 81, and Shirley Wirtjes, 79, of Morris, Minnesota.

Road conditions were good and the road was dry according to TxDot.

All passengers were wearing their seatbelts.

The Texas Highway Patrol Troopers are still investigating the crash and all findings are still preliminary.
