Car hits, kills driver involved in eastern Kansas crash, patrol says

WELLSVILLE, Kan. (KAKE) - The Kansas Highway Patrol says a 21-year-old man who was involved in a crash in the eastern part of the state was struck and killed by a car after exiting his vehicle.

The accident happened at around 6:15 a.m. Sunday on I-35 east of Wellsville. The patrol reports Matthew O’Neill had been in a collision and his VW Rabbit was disabled in a southbound lane of the interstate. He exited his vehicle and Ford Focus then his his vehicle and him.

O’Neill, of Wellsville, died at the scene. The 33-year-old woman driving the Ford was taken to a hospital in Ottawa for treatment of minor injuries.

The patrol did not provided details of O’Neill’s initial collision. But a separate crash report states his vehicle was also struck by a semi at around the same time he was struck by the Ford. The 58-year-old semi driver was hospitalized with serious injuries.
