Man hit, killed by minivan after exiting vehicle following rear-end crash

ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI – After rear-ending another vehicle, a man got out of his vehicle and was struck by a car and killed Tuesday afternoon.

Pau Khan Kap, 72, of Battle Creek, was killed around 5:40 p.m., Dec. 20, on M-89 at the intersection of 6th Street in Gun Plain Township, Michigan State Police said.

Kap was driving a Honda minivan when he rear-ended a Toyota SUV that was stopped on M-89, waiting to turn onto 6th Street, police said. Kap got out of his car after the crash and walked into the path of a Dodge minivan that was driving in the opposite lane.

A Honda SUV subsequently hit the Dodge minivan. The Honda SUV and Dodge minivan drivers were not injured, police said. The driver of the Toyota SUV, a 51-year-old Plainwell woman, had minor injuries, police said.

The crash remains under investigation, police said.

People involved in crashes should try to avoid exiting their vehicle, police said.

β€œIt is safer to remain in your vehicle with your seatbelt fastened and wait for first responders, unless remaining in your vehicle is unsafe,” Lt. DuWayne Robinson said.
