FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – One person was killed when a SUV rear-ended a semi on Interstate 469 early Monday morning.
The crash happened at 1:21 a.m. in the southbound lanes at mile-marker 14.6, near the Tillman Road interchange.
A semi-tractor trailer was broken down on the shoulder of the road and being worked on when an SUV veered onto the shoulder for unknown reasons, Allen County Sheriff’s spokesman Cpl. Adam Griffith said.
The SUV collided with the back end of the semi trailer.
A man riding in the passenger seat of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s department said. He was identified as 36-year-old John Thomas Xirafakis, Jr. of Adrian, Michigan.
A woman driving the SUV was taken to a local hospital in fair condition and has since been released.
The interstate was closed for approximately 4 hours.
An investigation into the crash continues.
