Good Samaritan among 2 seriously injured after being hit on N.J. Turnpike following earlier crash

A teenaged Good Samaritan standing on the New Jersey Turnpike in Burlington County was among two people seriously injured early Friday after a tractor-trailer hit a stalled vehicle following an earlier crash, authorities said.

The Good Samaritan, a 17-year-old from Scarsdale, New York, was on the northbound side assisting the driver of a Volkswagen Golf that became disabled in the center lane after a previous accident near mile post 42 in Mount Laurel at about 12:15 a.m, State Police said.

She and the driver of the disabled car — a Bergen County man in his late 30s — were flown to a hospital after the tractor trailer struck the Volkswagen, which then struck both pedestrians, State Police said.

The Volkswagen had become disabled with no working lights following a crash with a BMW, officials said. The teenager was driving by and stopped along the right shoulder to help.

A 54-year-old Maryland man driving the tractor-trailer was not injured. The BMW driver in the first crash was also not seriously hurt.

State Police said the crash remains under investigation.
