Pedestrian fatally struck after exiting vehicle on I-75 after wreck, police say

A person riding in a car got out of the vehicle after it crashed, then was fatally struck by another car Sunday night on the Downtown Connector, authorities said.

The Atlanta Police Department’s Accident Investigation Unit responded about 11:11 p.m. and found the passenger dead in a travel lane near the Brookwood split. The vehicle that struck the pedestrian stayed at the scene to speak with investigators, a police spokesperson said.

According to traffic investigators, the passenger and driver were involved in a single-vehicle accident on the ramp from I-75 to I-85 North. They both got out of their car and climbed over a dividing wall, stepping into traffic on I-75.

“At that time, the driver and passenger (now pedestrians) were both struck by a vehicle traveling along I-75 northbound,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “One pedestrian was transported to the hospital in stable condition.”

The names of those involved were not released. Police did not say Monday whether charges were expected for the driver of the second vehicle.
