Update | Kennewick driver is killed when semi rams his car after he stopped on Highway 395

A Kennewick man was killed when a semi truck slammed into his car after he stopped because of another crash on Highway 395 in the Kennewick city limits Monday.

Kevin Hinojosa, 27, had rear-ended a car as he headed up the hill into Kennewick from the blue bridge about 6:30 p.m., said Washington State Patrol Trooper Chris Thorson.

The other driver pulled off to the side of the roadway, but Hinojosa’s car had stalled or wouldn’t start. The collision happened on the overpass, just downhill from the Yelm Street intersection.

Minutes after the initial crash, he was inside his Honda HR-V with his seat belt on when the semi truck and trailer loaded with household goods hit the rear of his car. He died at the scene.

The truck driver, Suleiman S. Mohamed, 27, of Minkato, Minn., was not hurt.

The WSP said that Mohamed caused the crash, but is still investigating why it happened.

One lane of the highway was closed for a few hours while troopers investigated.
