CHELSEA (WWJ) – Four people have been hospitalized after a semi truck jackknifed and caused a multi-vehicle crash on I-94 in Washtenaw County Monday morning.
WWJ Traffic’s KT first reported on a major collision closing westbound I-94 at mile marker 153, just after Jackson Rd in Chelsea, at approximately 5 a.m.
Michigan State Police responded to the pile-up and Tweeted an update at 7 a.m., saying troopers were working the crash site and advising drivers to avoid the area.
MSP Lieutenant Rene Gonzoles of the First District later confirmed to WWJ that the collision involved three semi trucks and three passenger vehicles.
According to Lt. Gonzoles, one of the semis was going too fast for the slick road conditions, lost control and jackknifed. This first incident caused two other semi trucks to lose control and crash as well.
A car then struck the back of one of the semi trucks, triggering further damage.
Pictures Tweeted by MSP show the crushed cabs of two of the semi trucks as well as first responders and passengers surveying the damage.
Officials say several people were stuck in their vehicles, but police were able to get everyone out.
Lt. Gonzoles also told WWJ that Huron Valley Ambulance took one person in critical condition to University of Michigan Hospital. Three people were transported to Trinity Health Chelsea Hospital – one in serious condition.
Westbound I-94 was closed at Jackson Rd. following the crash, but all lanes have since reopened.
