FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — An SUV driver involved in a collision on the interstate was hit and killed by an oncoming tractor-trailer, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The Fairfield County Coroner Chris Hill said Herbert Cayruth Nelson III, 44, of Columbia, died at the scene.
The crash happened just after 2 a.m. Monday on I-77 north near the 32 mile marker, which is two miles south of Ridgeway, troopers said.
They said the crash involved Nelson’s 2008 Hummer H3 SUV and a 2024 Freightliner tractor-trailer.
Hill said Nelson’s SUV went off the road, striking a guard rail and went back onto the interstate.
Troopers said that while the Hummer was in the road disabled from that crash, the tractor-trailer heading north on I-77 hit the Hummer.
An autopsy was scheduled to confirm the cause of Nelson’s death, Hill said.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, but a passenger suffered minor injuries and was taken to Providence Health in Columbia, troopers said.
