Man hit, killed after crash on I-81 in Rockbridge County

UPDATE 10/15 AT 6:25 P.M. ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VA. (WFXR) — Virginia State Police (VSP) have identified the victim of a deadly crash that left I-81 North shut down in Rockbridge County on Oct. 14.

The crash remains under investigation; however, VSP says the incident took place at 5 p.m. on I-81 North, near Raphine Road.

According to VSP, a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe was illegally parked on the right shoulder of the highway, when it was hit by a 2018 Kenworth tractor-trailer. State police say the Tahoe then struck a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, who was also the driver of the Tahoe, was identified as 71-year-old Timothy James Korman, of Midlothian.

Korman passed away at the scene.

No charges are pending at this time.

UPDATE: ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VA. (WFXR) — The northbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County have reopened. No further details about the crash have been provided.

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, VA. (WFXR) — Interstate 81 going northbound is shut down as Virginia State Police investigates a deadly crash at the 202-mile marker, in Rockbridge County on Oct. 14.

According to troopers, an SUV stopped on the right shoulder was hit by a tractor-trailer at 5:02 p.m. One person was killed.

The northbound lanes are closed and will not reopen until the VSP Crash Reconstruction Team finishes its investigation. No information was released on how long that investigation will take.

Traffic is being detoured off the interstate at Exit 200. Drivers are urged to find an alternate route.
