Man struck, killed by car during tire change on I-95 in Delray Beach

Southbound Interstate-95 lanes in Delray Beach have reopened Tuesday after a deadly crash shut down the roadway for hours.

Florida Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 5:50 a.m. A West Palm Beach man was driving a two-door Chevrolet Camaro southbound, on the outside lane, leaving the Linton Boulevard overpass.

At the same time, the driver of a Ford pickup truck and a man were on the outside paved shoulder, changing a rear left tire.

A Chevrolet TrailBlazer SUV was parked in the gore next to the I-95 Southbound entrance, not functioning due to an unknown mechanical issue.

The driver of the Camaro veered to the right onto the shoulder, hitting the man and the Ford pickup truck. The Camaro then hit a guardrail, collided with the rear left side of the parked SUV and rotated onto the southbound entrance ramp. It came to a final stop, straddling two of the lanes.

At this time, officials say it is unknown what caused the driver to veer off onto the shoulder.

The man who was struck, a 44-year-old man from Palm Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Camaro was transported to Delray Medical Center.

The driver of the Ford pickup truck, a 40-year-old man from Lake Worth, was not injured.

Florida Highway Patrol says the investigation is ongoing.
