Vehicle stopped to fix flat tire in Broomfield hit, 2 killed

A driver stopped to fix a flat tire on the side of Interstate 25 in Broomfield on Friday. They and a passenger were then struck by an oncoming vehicle, killing them.

Police responded to a crash on northbound I-25 between 144th Avenue and Highway 7 around 10 p.m. Friday, according to a press release by the Broomfield Police Department. Responders found that two vehicles were involved in the incident.

The section of I-25 was shutdown until around 5 a.m. Saturday for investigation.

The investigation found that one vehicle had pulled over on the side of the interstate to change a flat tire. A person was outside of the vehicle working on the flat tire when an oncoming car struck them and the vehicle.

The person working on the tire and one passenger inside of the vehicle were killed in the crash. Three others were seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital, including a young child, according to the press release.

The Broomfield Police Department Traffic Team is continuing to investigate the crash to determine causes and contributing factors. The identities of those killed will be released by the Broomfield and Adams County Coroner at a later date.

Investigators released no information about the second vehicle, its driver or any potential charges.
