Driver Charged In Crash That Killed Morris County Pedestrian

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — A driver was charged in connection with a fatal crash after he hit and killed a Morris County man on the shoulder of I-280 on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Luis Nicheporuck, 56, of Randolph, had parked his Chevrolet on the right shoulder of the highway, west of milepost 4.4, in Roseland Borough, Essex County.

Around 4 p.m., a Ford pickup truck going westbound, driven by Valerian Kapanadze, a 48-year-old from Hackettstown, crashed into Nicheporuck and his parked car, according to New Jersey State Police Detective Jeffrey Lebron.

Nicheporuck sustained fatal injuries on the scene, police said.

Kapanadze was charged with vehicular homicide, child endangerment, evidence tampering and multiple traffic violations, Lebron said.

After processing, he was taken to the Essex County jail pending a detention hearing, police said.

According to Lebron, there were no other reported injuries and the crash remains under investigation.
