A Florida woman was hit by a car just after she fatally struck a man with her vehicle Wednesday night.
A 58-year-old man was attempting to cross St. Petersburg’s Gandy Boulevard at around 10:30 p.m. when a 23-year-old driver hit him, authorities told local station WFLA.
The woman got out of her vehicle to care for the man, but she was struck by a different motorist, also age 23, who was driving a Kia Optima.
The unnamed pedestrian, originally from New Jersey, was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the 23-year-old suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
No charges have been filed, but law enforcement said the incident is still under investigation.
Fatal accidents involving pedestrians appear to be on the rise, keeping with a decade-long trend, The Messenger reported earlier this year.
More pedestrians were killed in 2022 than in any year since 1981.
A confluence of factors is likely responsible: Most pedestrian fatalities occur along roadways where there is no sidewalk. Also, Americans’ preference for larger and heavier vehicles, including SUVs, may play a role since they are about 45% deadlier to pedestrians.
