A passenger was standing alongside a crash-disabled car on Interstate 70 early Sunday on the city’s East Side when the vehicle was struck minutes later by a semi-truck, killing him, Columbus police said.
The black 2013 Dodge Dart was heading west on I-70 at 12:02 a.m. Sunday when the driver hit a concrete barrier at an exit ramp at Interstate 270, police said. The car spun sideways and was left straddling both main lanes of I-70 with no lights on, police said.
The passenger, Kiare J. Harris, 29, got out of the disabled car and was alongside the passenger side of the vehicle when it was hit minutes later by the tractor-trailer, police said.
Harris was pronounced dead at the scene by medics, police said. The driver of the car, who was not identified in the news release, was taken to Mount Carmel East Hospital, and is expected to survive.
The truck driver was not hurt and remained at the scene, police said.
A portion of I-70 west in the area of the crash was closed for several hours following the crash.
