Pedestrian fatally injured in crash on I-95 in Augusta

PAXTON — A series of collisions involving a passenger vehicle and two semis on northbound Interstate 57 south of Paxton early Friday, Dec. 15, resulted in the driver of the passenger vehicle being taken to a local hospital with what state police said were life-threatening injuries.

An Illinois State Police Troop 5 news release said the three-vehicle accident happened on northbound I-57 near milepost 258, about three miles south of Paxton in Ford County, around 1:46 a.m. when a passenger vehicle struck the rear of a semi-trailer for unknown reasons, causing the passenger vehicle to be stalled with no lights activated in the right lane, where a second semi-trailer then struck it.

Both the passenger vehicle and the semi that struck it crossed the center median and came to a final rest in the southbound lanes of I-57, the release said.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, the release said.

Northbound I-57 was closed and reopened around 8:30 a.m.

“No further information is available at this time,” the release said.
