Wisconsin pileup: 30 cars, 6 semis and injuries on I-41 SB at WIS 28 in Washington County

A series of crashes just after 2 p.m. Thursday shut down all southbound lanes of I-41 at WIS 28 at the Dodge-Washington county line. The roadway reopened at about 8:45 p.m.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation said the crash involved 30 vehicles, including six semi-tractor-trailers. Three people were injured with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office asked drivers to avoid Interstate 41 southbound between STH 28 and County Highway D in the town of Wayne.

State patrol assisted those stuck in their vehicles on the freeway. Crews worked for hours in blizzard-like conditions, towing cars, pulling away semis and clearing debris from the roadway, while traffic continued to back up.

Some cars turned around and trucks reversed to get off of the south bound lanes.

Traffic was rerouted to WIS 175 as crews responded to clear the crash scene.

Wisconsin State Patrol and Washington County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incidents.
