GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A man who was struck by a car and killed on U.S. 131 was returning to his disabled vehicle after walking his children to the median, state police said.
The victim was a 49-year-old Grand Rapids man. His name has not been released.
The incident happened around 10 p.m. Thursday, March 30, on northbound U.S. 131 near Wealthy Street SE.
State police believe that the man’s vehicle ran out of gas before he walked his children, ages 5 and 7, to the median. When he started back to his vehicle, he was struck by another vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is a sorrowful reminder that if your vehicle becomes disabled on the freeway, please stay inside your vehicle until help arrives,” state police said in a tweet.
