Man struck, killed in hit-and-run while waiting for assistance with broken-down vehicle

BIRMINGHAM – A Birmingham man was killed Saturday, March 11, when a vehicle struck him at the 100 block of Roebuck Drive, Birmingham, while he was waiting for assistance with his disabled vehicle, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office announced.

James Lee Brown Jr., 53, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:02 a.m.

“The decedent was the driver and lone occupant of a disabled motor vehicle in the 100 block of Roebuck Drive,” Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said. “While standing outside of his vehicle and waiting on a friend to arrive to assist him, the decedent was struck by an unknown vehicle. The vehicle that struck the decedent fled the scene after the collision.”

The circumstances surrounding the death are being investigated by the Birmingham Police Department.
