WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a 21-year-old man is facing charges after a three-car crash on Interstate 40 East in Winston-Salem.
Garret Kneen of Yadkinville is facing a charge of failure to maintain a lane and a registration violation.
Troopers said Interstate 40 East is closed between Stratford Road and Hanes Mall Boulevard after a crash involving three vehicles.
According to the highway patrol, a tractor-trailer was parked on the right shoulder of I-40 East for mechanical issues.
Troopers said a pickup truck traveled off the road to the right and collided with the parked tractor-trailer. The truck then overturned.
The highway patrol said debris from the overturned pickup truck then hit another pickup truck, which resulted in the second truck overturning as well.
Both pickup truck drivers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
WXII 12 News first received a report of a crash in this area at 5:20 a.m. Thursday.
Video of the scene shows a tractor-trailer pulled over, a car flipped over, and a damaged pickup truck.
Winston-Salem Police said its officers are assisting with traffic control while the highway patrol conducts the investigation.
Police said eastbound traffic is being diverted onto Highway 421 and shared the following detour:
“Motorist must take Exit 189 (US 421) to NC 67 (Silas Creek Rd). Follow NC 67 toward Hanes Mall Blvd. Turn Right on Hanes Mall Blvd to reaccess I-40 East.”
The Department of Transportation estimates the interstate will reopen around noon.
