Coroner identifies driver of disabled car hit on Interstate 95 in Florence County

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Florida man has been identified as the person who died Friday, two days after his disabled car was hit in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Florence County.

Brian Broadwell, 59, died in the crash, according to Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken.

The crash happened at about 4:20 a.m. Wednesday near Alligator Road when a 2023 Chevrolet SUV, which was traveling south, crashed into a 2010 Ford sedan that was disabled in the roadway, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

After hitting the Ford, SHCP Lance Cpl. Lena Butler said the Chevrolet also hit a southbound 2023 Peterbilt tractor-trailer before going off the left side of the road and hitting a concrete barrier.

Broadwell was alone in the Ford and was taken to a local hospital by EMS. He died on Friday, Butler said. One person in the Chevrolet was also taken to the hospital, but no information about their injuries was immediately available. The truck driver was not hurt.

The highway patrol is investigating the crash.
