HPD: Good Samaritan tries to help crash victims, is struck by a vehicle, sent falling to her death

A good Samaritan was killed Monday after she was hit by a car when attempting to assist victims of a two-vehicle crash in the West Loop which eventually became a six-vehicle pileup, authorities said.

The woman had gotten out of her car to check on the victims of a crash just before 2 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the West Loop near the Southwest Freeway, Houston Police Sgt. Matthew Sudduth told Metro Video reporters. She was acting as a good Samaritan in hopes of aiding anyone injured in the initial crash, officials said.

However, four other cars soon added to what became a six-vehicle pileup. One of those vehicles hit the woman who was on foot, sending her over the barricade — a fall that ultimately appeared to lead to her death, Sudduth said. However, a Harris County medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine her exact cause of death, including whether the initial force from the vehicle possibly killed her before she fell.

The medical examiner’s office had not identified the woman as of early Monday.

No one else was injured in the six-vehicle collision, Sudduth said.

The driver of one vehicle involved in the crash fled the scene, according to Metro Video Services. It wasn’t immediately clear whether authorities were pursuing the driver on suspicion of hit-and-run.
