Livermore: Driver killed in four-car crash on I-580

LIVERMORE — The driver of a Ford Mustang died early Thursday following a freeway crash that involved four vehicles and blocked every lane, the California Highway Patrol said.

The pileup happened on eastbound Interstate 580 just west of First Street, according to the CHP. It was reported at 3:31 a.m.

Authorities did not identify the dead person, pending notification of family.

The Mustang was initially involved in a crash with a Ford F-350 pickup truck. That collision left the Mustang stopped crosswise in the second lane from the left, CHP spokesman Officer Tyler Hahn said in a statement.

The driver of a 2006 Chevy pickup truck that was approaching the disabled vehicle at more than 75 mph looked over a shoulder to make a lane change and then looked back at the roadway only to see the Mustang directly in his truck’s path, Hahn said.

The truck slammed into the Mustang’s front passenger door without braking, then collided with a Ford Expedition, Hahn said.

The impact killed the Mustang’s driver.

The Chevy truck’s driver was hospitalized with broken bones in both legs. The drivers of the Ford Expedition and the Ford pickup were not injured, Hahn said.

The crash closed all eastbound lanes. One lane opened around 5:15. They all were open by 6:50 a.m.
