North Chicago man fatally struck by hit-and-run driver after getting out of his car near Fox Lake

Sheriff’s officials say a North Chicago man died after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver after he got out of his car, which was stuck in a ditch, near Fox Lake Monday morning.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Spring Grove Fire Protection District responded around 2:08 a.m. Monday to Wilmot Road and Paddock Road in unincorporated Fox Lake for a vehicle crash.

First responders found a male subject who was unconscious and not breathing down on the roadway, the sheriff’s office said.

A preliminary investigation showed the man, a 39-year-old from North Chicago, was driving on Wilmot Road when he got stuck in a ditch.

The man got out of his vehicle near the roadway when an unknown white vehicle, possibly a Kia, was traveling southbound on Wilmot Road.

The vehicle struck the man just north of Paddock Road and fled the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

The 39-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is in the process of being scheduled.

The Fox Lake Police Department, Spring Grove Police Department and Richmond Police Department also responded to the scene to assist.

The crash is being investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
