Driver crashes into abandoned truck, results in injuries

Friday morning, multiple Shelby County emergency personnel responded to an injury accident on westbound Interstate 64, just before the Waddy/Peytona exit.

At approximately 11:04 a.m., a driver veered into the right shoulder of the highway and directly hit the bed of an abandoned truck. Three passersby stopped to provide assistance to the injured driver until emergency personnel arrived.

Nine emergency vehicles from five different agencies responded to the crash scene, including Shelbyville Fire Department, Waddy Volunteer Fire Department, Shelby County EMS, Shelby County Sheriff’s Department and the Kentucky State Police.

One of the civilians who initially provided assistance also witnessed the accident and stated the driver initially drifted left across two lanes and hit the inside guard rail. The vehicle then bolted back into the westbound lane and appeared to be under control. Unfortunately, the driver then began drifting right across traffic and into the median, where it hit the bed of the parked truck head-on.

After several minutes, first responders were able to remove the driver from his vehicle. The injured driver walked to the waiting gurney with some assistance from medical personnel.

No additional information regarding the accident or the well-being of the driver was available at the time of publication.
