Police search for semi after man killed on I-40 in Durham

A fatal crash overnight shut down Interstate 40 in Durham for hours early Monday. Police are still searching for a semi-truck involved in the crash.

At about 12:45 a.m. Monday, a man tried to cross I-40 to get to his car, which had run out of gas near Exit 273, Durham police said in a news release.

Police identified the man as 44-year-old Benito Briones, of Carrboro.

An SUV going west on I-40 first hit Briones, then he was hit by a semi-truck, according to the Durham Police Department. The SUV stopped after the crash, but the semi left the scene.

No one else was injured in the crash, police said. The investigation shut down I-40 westbound for about 7 hours early Monday.
