FRANKLIN, Ind. – One person died due to an accident on southbound I-65, between the Whiteland and Franklin exits early Sunday morning.
The fatal crash involving a car and a semi-truck took place at around 4:30 a.m., according to the Indiana State Police (ISP). The Johnson County Coroner’s Office says that Destiny Lynn Johnson, 23, of Indianapolis, was identified as the victim of the crash.
When Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived they found a passenger car underneath a semi-trailer. It was heavily damaged and was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters and Emergency Medical Services extinguished the flames and extricated an adult female from the wreckage, She was pronounced deceased at the scene. There were no other injuries reported.
Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists have initially determined that the victim was driving south on I-65 when for unknown reasons she drove off the right side of the road onto the shoulder and struck the rear end of a parked semi tractor-trailer. The reason for the semi being stopped on the side of the interstate is not known at this time.
The southbound lanes of I-65 were restricted for over 4 hours while the accident was investigated and the wreckage removed.
ISP says that information about the crash is preliminary and the investigation is ongoing.
