VSP investigating chain-reaction crashes in Augusta County

AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) – The Virginia State Police is reminding drivers to be aware of changes in traffic.

On Thursday, troopers responded to multiple crashes in Augusta County, and though there were several injuries, none of them appeared to be life-threatening.

The first crash occurred around 12:20 p.m. and in total, there were 12 separate crashes in the area of the interchange between interstates 64 and 81.

That first crash was in the northbound lanes of 81 at the 228 mile marker.

Additional crashes then occurred as traffic slowed in reaction to that crash.

The next two crashes were also in the northbound lanes, at mile marker 223 and at the interchange.

VSP says traffic continued to back up due to the crashes.

While troopers were working to clear these crashes and keep traffic moving, there was a crash in the westbound lanes of 64.

That one occurred around 2:25 p.m. near the 90 mile marker when a box truck suddenly stopped for traffic.

A Brinks armored vehicle swerved onto the right shoulder to try and avoid the box truck, but it was then rear-ended by a tractor trailer.

That crash caused the armored vehicle to run off the road, hit an embankment and overturned, while the tractor trailer hit the guardrail and then the box truck.

The driver of the tractor trailer and the driver and passenger in the armored vehicle were all taken to Augusta Health with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the tractor trailer, a man from Canada, was cited for following too closely.

Around 5:45 p.m., troopers responded to a crash involving seven vehicles in the westbound lanes of 64 near mile marker 91.

All of these crashes are still under investigation.
