Two people found dead in car submerged in Loxahatchee canal

LOXAHATCHEE GROVES — A man and a woman were killed early Sunday when their SUV traveled off a road northwest of Loxahatchee Groves and plunged into a canal, police said.

Palm Beach County sheriff’s officials said Liliana Francisco Vargas, 19, of Loxahatchee was driving a 2020 Toyota Rav4 with passenger Deric Lozano Varela, 21, of West Palm Beach eastbound on 60th Street North at about 2:45 a.m. when for unknown reasons, the Toyota left the road at the intersection with 190th Terrace North.

The SUV then hit the guardrail on the nearby canal, and entered the water on its roof, deputies said.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue officials responded to the site at about 7:45 a.m. after receiving a call about a car in a canal, the agency said. The caller told Fire Rescue they did not see the car go into the canal, but saw it in the water.

Rescue workers found a “single vehicle, partially submerged and upside down” in the canal and “immediately” entered the water. Vargas and Varela were found in the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
