GONZALES, La. – Over a dozen vehicles were involved in multi-car pileup early this morning on Interstate 10 in East Baton Rouge Parish.
It happened around 5 a.m. on Tuesday on the westbound overpass of I-10 at Siegen Lane. The accidents started when one car had been left abandoned near the top of the overpass, after it either spun out of control or broke down, according to a local towing company, Gonzales Towing & Repair, Inc.
Another vehicle traveling westbound then slammed into the abandoned car, and other oncoming vehicles crashed into them one after another creating the pileup. Fourteen vehicles in all were involved in the accident.
Some of the vehicles landed on the side of Interstate 10 while many were involved in crashes on the interstate.
Witnesses said at least two people were transported from the scene of the multi-vehicle pileup. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.
Sources told UWK they didn’t see any sand or salt on the overpass, which likely became icy due to precipitation on the roadway overnight.
