Disabled motorist struck while flagging for help in Linden area

A crash involving a pedestrian from a disabled vehicle was reported in the Linden area around 8 p.m. Sunday.

Westarea Fire and Rescue Station 20 was dispatched to N.C. Highway 217 regarding a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

First responders reported finding a man lying on the ground and a white Chevrolet Camaro stopped on the same side of the highway with heavy damage to its windshield.

Emergency responders immediately initiated life saving measures and learned that the closest Cumberland County paramedic was 29 minutes away.

Harnett County EMS Medic 5 from the Erwin Fire station was requested for mutual aid assistance to shorten the wait time.

Medic 5 arrived and transported the victim to Betsy Johnson Hospital where he was airlifted to a regional trauma center.

Trooper M. Washington of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Troop B District 1 responded to investigate.

His preliminary findings indicate the yet-to-be identified pedestrian was driving a motor home which became disabled near the crash site. The recreational vehicle stopped partially in the highway. The pedestrian was attempting to flag down a motorist for help when Washington says the Camaro traveled left of center to pass the RV and struck the pedestrian.

The driver of the Camaro remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
