Pedestrian dies after hit by car in Wilkes County

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — A man is dead after he was hit by a car in Wilkes County.

NC State Highway Patrol said they responded to a crash Monday on Clingman Road at Bethel Road around 7 p.m.

When troopers arrived, they discovered a 1990 Ford F-250 traveling north on Clingman Road struck a pedestrian who was in the northbound lane directing traffic after his car had become disabled and was partially in the roadway. The pedestrian was wearing a reflective vest.

Troopers said the pedestrian, Lester Lee Whisenhunt, 48, of Elkin, died at the scene.

The driver of the Ford, Owen Harland Ingram, 69, of Roaring River, was not injured, according to NC State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the initial investigation indicates speed and impairment were not contributing factors in the crash.

NC State Highway Patrol said charges are pending upon completion of the ongoing investigation and consultation with the Wilkes County District Attorney’s Office.
