2 men killed by car as they fixed flat tire on shoulder of I-78, police say

Two men were struck and killed Wednesday on Interstate 78 in Somerset County as they fixed a flat tire on the shoulder of the highway, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 5:25 p.m. at milepost 38.7 in Warren Township, according to a spokesman for New Jersey State Police.

Based on a preliminary investigation, a minivan with a flat tire was stopped on the right shoulder and two men were outside between the right rear of the vehicle and the guardrail.

Tuoc Q Dau, 46, and Thao P Ho, 62, both of Pennsylvania, were struck when a passenger vehicle entered the shoulder, striking the guardrail, the minivan, and the men, the state police spokesman said.

Dau and Ho died of their injuries, the spokesman said. State police did not release information about the driver.

No charges were filed as of early Thursday and the crash remains under investigation, state police said.
