Eight car pile-up on Highway 17 in Jones Co., three taken to hospital

JONES COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - A Jones County official says heavy smoke from a nearby fire is likely a factor in a multi-car pile-up along an Eastern Carolina highway Tuesday morning.

Ryan Mills, with Jones County Emergency Services, says eight cars are involved in a collision along Highway 17.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says it happened in the Northbound lanes at mile marker 120 outside of Maysville near Green Way.

Mills tells WITN that three people were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

According to Mills, there is heavy smoke in the area from an ongoing fire/smoldering at Green Recycling. She says Green Recycling has been maintaining that fire since Friday.

Officials ask people to drive with caution.

Fire, EMS, sheriff’s deputies, NCDOT crews, and Highway Patrol troopers have all responded, according to Mills.
