GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — People were injured in a multiple-vehicle crash on US-131 in Grand Rapids Thursday night that shut down northbound lanes of the highway, the Grand Rapids Police Department confirmed.
The closure is at northbound US-131 and 28th Street, according to GRPD and the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Up to as many as 15 vehicles were reported to be in the crash, GRPD said, and some people are injured, although police did not provide a specific number.
One person who was involved in the crash told News 8 he thought around 12 vehicles were involved.
“We were driving downtown and like three or four cars crashed in front of us and then we hit them, and then another two, three cars hit us in the back,” said Mario Rodriguez.
He said his family was safe and uninjured after the crash and emergency response arrived within minutes.
A News 8 reporter at the scene saw several wrecked cars, at least one crash under the Burton Street overpass and a pileup starts about a quarter of a mile south of that, stretching all the way to 28th Street.
It’s not clear what caused the crash, but police said it was likely weather. Lake-effect snow moved in Thursday night, and the snowfall is expected to last through early Saturday morning, Storm Team 8 forecasts. A winter weather advisory is in effect for most of West Michigan through 7 a.m. Saturday.
GRPD warned drivers to stay off the roads, as the department responded to several incidents in the area.
Multiple agencies responded to the US-131 crash, GRPD said.
