Original Story:

Louisville police are searching for the drivers of two vehicles involved in a serious crash Tuesday morning that shut down I-65 South.

Shortly after 5:30 a.m., LMPD responded to a multi-vehicle collision on I-65 southbound near University Boulevard, according to an LMPD news release.

Officers on scene found at least five vehicles that had become involved in the collision. Investigators believe two cars initiated the crash.

The drivers of the cars investigators believe started the crash fled the scene, one on foot and another was picked up by another vehicle traveling southbound.

It is unknown whether or not the drivers who fled had any type of injuries.

Three commercial dump trucks traveling on I-65 South came upon the collision, having no time to react to the initial collision and a chain reaction collision ensued involving the dump trucks.

One adult male driver from one of the commercial dump trucks had to be extricated from the vehicle by Louisville Fire and Rescue. That victim was transported to University Hospital with serious injuries and rushed into surgery. His condition is unknown currently.

The other two commercial drives were not seriously hurt and checked out by EMS on scene.

Due to the dump trucks’ saddle tanks rupturing there is a lot of diesel fuel that needs to be cleaned up. Authorities say the cleanup process will take some time. I-65 South will be blocked and I-65 North near the scene is reduced as well. LMPD’s Fourth Division is currently leading this investigation.
