WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCBD) – A man attempting to repair a disabled vehicle along a dark rural road was critically injured Wednesday after being crushed between two vehicles.
Colleton County Fire Rescue said a man was working on the vehicle around 8:30 p.m. when a Chevrolet Trailblazer, traveling north on Cooks Hill Road, crashed into the stopped disabled vehicle.
“A family member had a pickup truck parked in front of the disabled car. Apparently, when the Trailblazer struck the rear of the disabled Genesis, the impact pushed it into the pickup truck, crushing the man between the vehicles,” officials said.
The man suffered multiple traumatic injuries and a near amputation of one leg. Bystanders assisted the injured man until emergency crews arrived. He was airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina.
Fire-rescue officials said the driver of the Trailblazer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. No one else at the scene reported injuries.
