Coroner identifies 21-year-old man killed after being struck by semi-truck on I-94 near Gurnee

The coroner has released the identity of a 21-year-old man who died after he was struck by a semi-truck in traffic on Interstate 94 near Gurnee Saturday morning.

The Illinois State Police, Gurnee Police Department, Gurnee Fire Department and Libertyville Fire Department responded around 10:56 a.m. Saturday to Interstate 94 at mile marker 10 in Gurnee.

Illinois State Police (ISP) said troopers with Troop 3 arrived and found the incident occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 94 near Route 21.

A preliminary investigation shows a white semi-truck pulling a trailer struck a pedestrian.

The male pedestrian was in the right lane when he was struck, ISP said.

Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek identified the victim as Nikolay Krupp, 21, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Krupp was near a vehicle, a silver Ford Escape, which ISP said was disabled on the right shoulder.

Krupp was pronounced dead at the scene and the Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified.

Lanes three and four were shut down but traffic remained open in lanes one and two.

ISP said the lanes were reopened around 2:45 p.m. Saturday following the investigation.

Troopers at the scene reported Krupp possibly intentionally stepped in front of the truck but ISP officials have not confirmed the detail.

Banek said Monday that an autopsy performed on Krupp confirmed he died from blunt force injuries.
