CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The heavy, early-morning fog set off a domino effect of crashes on Farm-to-Market Road 136 in San Patricio county Monday, after causing a crash near Aransas Pass.
At about 8:30 a.m., a recreational vehicle on County Road 102 tried crossing FM 136.
DPS Public Information Sgt. Harold “Rob” Mallory said the RV didn’t see a white commercial vehicle approaching on CR 102 as the RV crossed, and hit it, leaving the RV disabled in FM 136.
The disabled vehicle then caused a second crash, which happened when an 18-wheeler tried avoiding the RV. They largely were able to avoid it, but did hit it, causing minor damage to the 18-wheeler.
As this crash happened, a third took place while traffic was slowing to avoid the second crash.
“Another commercial motor vehicle came up behind and just didn’t see it enough time to slow down and stop, so they ended up striking several other vehicles,” Mallory said.
He said a man and a woman in the RV only suffered minor injuries, and were taken to Portland for treatment.
He did not say whether any of the drivers or passengers in other vehicles were injured during the chain reaction.
He said it’s important for drivers to be completely focused on the road when driving conditions are compromised like Monday morning.
“You know, when it’s foggy out like that, just always give yourself more time,” he said. “Just be extra cautious . . . you never know if somebody’s broken down or if they should crash ahead. So just be extra mindful of that.”
