Hastings man fatally struck while removing deer from road identified

Authorities have identified the Hastings man killed when he was struck by a driver Wednesday morning as he tried to remove a deer he had hit from the road.

According to the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, the collision happened on County Road 46 near General Sieben Drive in Marshan Township at around 6:35 a.m., and resulted in the death of 69-year-old Ricky Delbert Edstrom.

Edstrom had reportedly struck a deer while traveling west on Dakota County Road 46. He pulled over onto the north shoulder and exited his vehicle to pull the deer off the roadway.

Another driver who had stopped to help him then witnessed an eastbound car strike Edstrom, who died at the scene despite lifesaving measures.

Police say that the driver that struck Edstrom was uninjured and cooperative.
